Mikoto didn't have a family or a place to call home, he was just a young fox that found himself in a form that he recognized as a human.

Things quickly changed for him when he started to live amongst humans. He found himself skilled with the sword, and soon found himself doing work related to combat. He was a mercenary at first, though he wasn't fond of needless killing, so he did guard work most of the time. It was only when one had said to him in passing that he should try to become a knight did things start to look up for Mikoto. He had the chivalrousness needed to qualify, so why not give it a shot? they said.

To his surprise and many others, he was knighted, and when he gained more experience in the field, he found himself as the personal guard of the princess.

His time as a personal guard was surprisingly peaceful, stale at times, but he was quite content. The young princess relied on him for many things, and it was apparent that the royal family grew fond of him. He thinks it may be overstepping to think so, but he thought of them as family, or at least as close as it can get. These were the people he wanted to see grow old, to see their smiles stay distinctly the same despite the inevitable changes that come with time, that these were the people he would gladly protect until his last breath.

But he was made to promise, a promise to live, and he mustn't break it, as promises are meant to be kept, and so he assumed that, it would be enough to live alongside them. Time would only tell, but as of now Mikoto is content.
